Welcome to your go-to source for entertainment Wait for it Gaming, wait for it Anime Plus Ultra, mr Eric Almighty and Phil the Filipino. Yeah, they've got you covered And all you gotta do is Wait for it. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the Wait for it podcast. I am your co-host, phil Smith, aka Phil the Filipino, and welcome to the June edition of Netflix and Phil. I am super excited to talk about the film today, a film that is actually on Netflix, trying to get a little bit better at that as far as diversifying my suggestions And not simply diving into that Apple TV well, which I certainly could and I probably will next month, just as I said so. But I am very excited to talk about extraction too. Now, obviously, as a caveat, this will probably require you to have already seen the first extraction. This is going to be a review and a recommendation for the film, as you guys will hear me talk about it here in just a moment, i will be pretty much absolutely gushing over this movie, but there will be full spoilers for the first extraction. There won't be a whole lot, but you know again, if you haven't seen the first movie, definitely suggest watching that one first, because everything they did in extraction has just been elevated here in the sequel, so excited to get into that with you. All here today Want to welcome in any brand new listeners to the show.

Speaker 1:

Maybe we met you at a bold met series here in Jacksonville. Maybe you're taking a look at some of our past episodes. Thank you, guys so much, and for all of you returning listeners, thank you all so much for the continued support. We truly could not do this without you, for both new and established listeners. Make sure you stick around to the very end of the episode so I can let you know we can find the rest of our content, as well as additional ways you can support the podcast.

Speaker 1:

But without any further delay, let's go ahead and talk about extraction to film on Netflix. It is a sequel to 2020's extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler rake. After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, bangladesh, tyler rake is back and his team is ready to take on their next mission. Extraction is based on the graphic novel called see you, dad, which is written by Andy Parks, joe Russo, anthony Russo, fernando Leon Gonzalez and Eric skillman. Two of those names probably stand out Anthony and Joe Russo. Definitely one of the reasons.

Speaker 1:

I checked out the first film back in 2020, which was this was a pandemic film. I remember watching it with my friend, kyrie, and you know seeing trailers and being very, very intrigued by it. You know again I've talked about this recently with some episodes that have come out is every once in a while you just want to watch a really really good, mindless action movie, and that's what extraction was to an extent, but it did have a lot of heart. Like Chris Hemsworth brings a lot to the table with Tyler rake. Now his character development might not be that deep below surface level, but it is nice that they have a lot of experience, but it is nice that they try to flesh out this character.

Speaker 1:

If you remember from the first film, tyler has never gotten over and understandably so the death of his son, and his guilt is that he voluntarily took a tour in Afghanistan so that he did not have to see his six year old son suffer from cancer, and he did pass away while he was on that tour. His wife consequently leaves him and he has basically been on his own since that happened, and we do get that expanded upon here in the second movie, which I really enjoyed. There are some things in terms of some other characters that they focused on that I kind of wish they actually had given more of that spotlight to Tyler, as well as how he has dealt, or not dealt, really with the loss of his son. Doesn't ruin the movie or anything, but you know, just would have liked to see more of Chris Hemsworth again fleshing out this character, which he's done a very, very good job of. But let's get to the important part here with this movie. It is balls to the wall action Again.

Speaker 1:

As I mentioned, everything that was done in instruction one is just absolutely amplified here in the second film. Netflix gets a lot of shit, and understandably so. For a lot of their films, you know, the quality just really isn't there. But honestly, i'm kind of bummed that I wasn't able to see extraction to in a big time theater. It's got fantastic fight choreography, the weapons hit hard, the punches hit hard. There is an absolutely stunning one shot that lasts roughly 20 minutes. A lot of people have been talking about this shot in the film and deservedly so. It is fantastic. It starts off in a Georgian prison, transitions to a car chase and then ends with a shootout with a helicopter. It is absolutely outstanding. And Chris Hemsworth is not the only one that stands out in this segment either. Big shout out to Goshif de Farahani, who reprises her role as Nick Khan from the first film, and also a big shout out to Tanat and Deluxe Svili, who plays Katavin Rodiani. She is the mother to the two kids that Tyler is also trying to extract from this prison. All of them really, really excel during this portion of the film.

Speaker 1:

It does start off a little slow. I saw some people kind of making the point that they wish they had kind of just jumped into the action. It does pick up after the events of the first movie, shows you how he survived those wounds that he suffered at the end of the first film. And listen, as I mentioned, i want to see Rick fleshed out more as a character, but they didn't really do that in this segment. Like, if you're going to start off a little bit slow, then give us some character development. You know, don't make us just wish. Ok, come on, let's get to the shooting Now. This is a minor spoiler here, One thing that I think that was a little bit of a bummer, just because of how the first extraction film ends.

Speaker 1:

There is that moment where OV emerges from the pool and we see that blurred figure. And when that movie came out it was intended to be an ending in which the audience kind of it's left up to them whether or not Tyler is still alive. Obviously now with the second movie we know that he is alive, but we don't see any kind of follow up as far as his relationship with OV that he developed over the first film. Not the worst things, you know. Maybe they're just hammering home The fact that, hey, tyler Wake is a mercenary, he's an extractor And once his first mission is over, even though he does care about OV, which we saw in the first movie, it's on to the next mission and he can't let whatever happened in the past weigh him down Really quick to bring it back to go.

Speaker 1:

She's a fair honey here again, nick Khan, really, really great chemistry with her onscreen brother Yaz, who also is reprising his role. He's played by Adam Bessa. I haven't really seen go. She did anything other than these extraction films, but she may be on the cusp of something big as far as being an action star. Again, i think she's maybe suffering from the lack of exposure because these movies went straight to Netflix, but she is fantastic.

Speaker 1:

I think it was last month I talked, i did a review for Ghosted and you know talked about how it kind of underwhelmed me in Ghost Sheaf Day And I'll just say this as far as, like being a badass character, ghost Sheaf Day, farahani far outclassed Anaday Armas. Now Ghosted. It's a totally different movie. Ghosted is a action romantic comedy. I mean, i'm just going to say you know, anaday Armas has been kind of crowned as this was one of these next big action stars, but Farahani, again, she outclasses her as far as what I've seen from Anaday Armas and what I've seen now in two outings from Farahani Also couldn't get through this review without talking about the villains.

Speaker 1:

As far as the Radianis, zorab Davi definitely come off as two complete pieces of shit. However, they are not anything more than surface level bad guys, but they hit hard in their pieces of shit and they do their job. Extraction 2 ups the ante and again literally every single category. I'm excited to see what's next for this franchise Between Extraction 1 and 2,. Chris Hemsworth is really kind of emerging as this Tom Cruise-esque action star and I absolutely love it. Thor is my favorite Avenger and there are plenty of Easter eggs for those Marvel fans, probably courtesy of Joe and Anthony Russo. All in all, definitely worth your time. Currently on Rotten Tomatoes that has a 75% tomato meter score and an 89% audience score.

Speaker 1:

I think these movies really would have benefited from a theatrical release Again, just because of how crazy the action set pieces are Probably wouldn't want to release it right now with all the other big-name movies coming out here at this time. Obviously the flash Disney Pixar as a film coming out in an elemental across spider-verse just came out really, really crowded summer blockbuster season Transformers, obviously. So I hope people don't skip out on this one just because it is a Netflix film and you know Their track record is pretty rough. But between extraction one and extraction two, again Just enough character development and plenty of action. So don't skip out on this one.

Speaker 1:

If I had to give it a grade, or probably give it a solid eight out of ten, this one is certainly not for the faint of heart. I usually have a rough time with a lot of brutality. This one definitely gets pretty gnarly at some points. So if you're a little squeamish, you have been warned. But yeah, guys, let me know if you check out this movie. It's available on Netflix right now two hours and three minutes. Put it on and enjoy just the absolute Ridiculousness of the plot armor for our main characters. See a lot of things go boom, watch a lot of people get the shit kicked out of Them. It's a fun time, but yeah, everybody, thanks so much for joining me for this episode. We do have bold Matt Siri coming up this weekend here at the Primors Mourn Convention Center in Jacksonville, florida. I hope to see a whole bunch of you there.
